Huntington North High School is adding a construction trades program for the 2023–24 school year. This program will expand upon the introduction to construction class the school has offered for several years.
“I am excited that our students will now have an opportunity to continue learning in the area of construction,” said teacher Dave Harvey, who will lead the program. “Students will be demonstrating their skillsets by working on a real project that they can take pride in for years to come. This program creates another pathway for our students and will be a win for both our students and the community of Huntington County.”
Students participating in the program will take a principles of construction trades course, as well as construction trades: general carpentry and construction trades: framing and finishing courses. A construction trades capstone will be added for the 2024–25 academic year, allowing students the opportunity to participate in the half-day program for two years.
“The addition of a construction trades program will be huge for our students,” said Huntington North High School Principal Pat McLaughlin. “Students will have the opportunity to get some hands-on experiences that could help them get started in a career down the road.”
There are currently 53 students enrolled in the introduction construction course this year.
“We are looking forward to creating partnerships with our community,” said Career and Technical Education Director Tiffanney Drummond. “Our students have been building sheds, pergolas and other smaller projects for years. I can’t wait to see what we can do with a half-day program.”
In addition to the new construction pathway, HNHS offers students career pathways in accounting, advanced manufacturing/precision machining, agriculture, automotive, biomedical sciences, criminal justice, education professions, engineering, emergency medical services, human and social services, pre-nursing (CNA), radio and television and welding. Students may also take a variety of elective courses in architecture, business, digital design, information technology, marketing, manufacturing and transportation.
