Posted on 01/11/2024
Huntington County Sheriff Chris Newton presented on the importance of integrating more School Resource Officer (SRO) positions into Huntington County Community School Corporation. The Sheriff's Department has been working diligently to make this a reality. "I have felt that we needed to have a county officer involved in our school corporation. The city has been pulling all the weight and the kids need more supervision and someone to lean on and not just for safety, but for someone else to talk to." states Sheriff Newton. After meeting with the commissioner, councils and Mr. Trout, the vision has become a reality.
"The next step to truly make the vision happen is to find the right guy. I already had someone in the back of my mind on who I wanted." states Sheriff Newton. Deputy Don Whitney has been with the Sheriff's Department for seven years. "When you are on third shift and out in the county, it is all about communication. Don has done exceptional job and is an outstanding officer." states Sheriff Newton. The Prosecutor's Office, other officers, and outlying agencies are all in agreement that Deputy Whitney would be a great fit as a School Resource Officer (SRO). Deputy Whitney has completed his his SRO training and will be shadowing under Officer Whitman to become acclimated and familiar with Huntington County Community School Corporation.
Deputy Whitney was in attendance and had the opportunity to speak to the school board. Deputy Whitney is excited to use his communications skills and sharing his life experiences with students to in need. "As far as kids go, I don't thing there are any more of a precious resource. It is humbling experience to have the opportunity to be trusted with our most precious resource, which is our children."
We welcome Deputy Whitney to Huntington County Community Schools in the continual pursuit of providing more resources for every student, every day.
