When You Open a Book: Horace Mann Explores the Wonders of Literacy
Posted on 11/06/2023
"When you open a book, you can journey so far--to the depths of the ocean or a far distant star." Families line up while their children eagerly await the arrival of the Storybook Queen, Rhonda Bockover (Horace Mann Library Clerk), as she opens the gates to a reading adventure. Families navigate through a directed path through the gate that allows students to lead the way in reading 'When You Open a Book' by Caroline Derlatka. Students show their reading prowess as they read aloud to their friends and family before rushing off to the next station.
As the story ends, another gate opens through the Riverview Trail that leads through a journey revealing iconic storybook characters. Horace Mann Staff get into character as they quote lines from Harry Potter, The Wizard of Oz to name a few. Students wander and explore through the Storybook Walk with laughter and excitement. As the walk subsides, students are left wanting to dig into a good book seeking out more adventures.
Horace Mann Elementary plans to come back 'better than ever' with their annual Storybook Walk next fall. Thank you to all the family members that brought their children to the Storybook Walk, and thank you for all the volunteers of Horace Mann PTO for all of your work to make this even possible!
"Oh the worlds you'll go and the places you'll see... When you hold a book you hold the key!" -Caroline Derlatka
