Weather Closings and eLearning

Weather Closings and eLearning

Mr. Harris discusses weather closings and eLearningI would like to take this opportunity to discuss what happens at HCCSC when we are forced to cancel school due to weather conditions and why we are implementing eLearning.

The Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) requires every school district to be in session for 180 school days. HCCSC believes face-to-face instruction between students and teachers is the very best use of this time. However, Indiana weather can be quite unpredictable (as we have witnessed in the last two weeks), and we needed to have back-up plans in place for school closings. There were five make-up days built into the HCCSC 2018-2019 calendar. These days will be made up during the week of March 18, 2019. Now that all five make-up days have been exhausted, eLearning has been implemented.

HCCSC believes that eLearning is beneficial in several ways. Most importantly, it allows students to continue the education that they were receiving in the classroom.  Secondly, it is used to avoid having to extend the school year beyond the scheduled last day of school.

I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the students, parents, teachers, and administrators for embracing this new method of instruction. Thank you to our community partners such as the Boys and Girls Club of Huntington County who assisted nearly 200 students during the cancellations of last week.

Thank you for your continued support of HCCSC. Think Spring!
