This program is one more way to promote literacy with students and families. Each week, someone from the Flint Springs staff uploads a video, where they read a book of their choice out loud for students and their families to follow. This initiative follows a trend of schools across the nation leveraging social media to give children access to books in read-aloud form.

“This fits into our literacy focus as a district, because the foundation piece to literacy is that our kids learn to love books. That starts in the laps of those they love. Sometimes our kids don’t have laps they can snuggle up in to be read to, but our hope is that this gives them another outlet to find that literacy foundation,” stated Mrs. Aimee Lunsford, Principal at Flint Springs Elementary.

Exposing children to reading reaps many lifelong benefits. Reading helps children develop their language skills, as well as their imagination and creativity. It also helps children develop empathy by identifying with characters in the story. Reading with your child can also be a bonding experience. Find something that you both enjoy, and read all about it!

The first video is already online. Mrs. Lunsford read Snow Dance by Lezlie Evans, and it already has more than 750 views! Families can tune in each week for a new video, and can listen again and again via Facebook and Twitter by searching #FSReads
