Huntington North senior Gavin Byerly signed with Manchester University on Thursday to continue his academic and cross country and track careersHuntington North High School senior Gavin Byerly made his college choice official with a signing ceremony on Thursday afternoon, committing to Manchester University to continue his academic and cross country and track careers with the Spartans.

Byerly noted his decision ultimately came down to Manchester and Trine University, and noted Manchester’s proximity to home was a deciding factor.

“It’s a great campus,” Byerly said at the signing. “I love the program. The cross country team seems really tight knit, and it just seems like a good community down there.”

Byerly has been a valuable member of the Viking cross country team throughout his high school career, highlighted by a Northeast 8 Conference Second Team All-Conference selection as a senior. Byerly’s personal record on the cross country course came in his junior year on Oct. 17, 2020 at the Marion Regional at Indiana Wesleyan University, as he stopped the clock at 16:56.6. Byerly also managed top-20 placements in the Marion Sectional and Regional meets as a senior.

Huntington North boys cross country coach Tim Schultz noted Byerly’s work ethic is what sets him apart and has allowed him to be a good influence on others in the cross country program.

“Gavin was one of those runners that would show up and do the work,” Schultz said. “No complaining and will do whatever is asked of him. He was a quiet leader, using actions not words to lead.”

Huntington North boys track and field coach Scott Bower also echoed Schultz’s sentiment of Byerly’s biggest strength as a runner being his work ethic and knows that will serve him well in the future.

“Gavin is dedicated and focused in his training and racing,” Bower said. “He learns from each competition and is always improving his racing tactics. Gavin sets a great example of how to work hard and challenge yourself that all his teammates can see.”

This season is Byerly’s first as a member of the Viking track and field team. Byerly’s personal record times thus far include 53.34 seconds in the 400 meter run (set on Wednesday against Norwell), 2:06.84 in the 800 meter run and 4:43/62 in the 1,600 meter run (both set on April 26 at Columbia City).

Byerly was also a three-year member of the Huntington North baseball program before turning his athletic focus fully to his running career.

In the classroom, Byerly plans to study accounting with a goal of earning a master’s degree within his four years at Manchester.
