FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
HCCSC Facility Improvements
September 16, 2020 – Huntington, Indiana
The Huntington County Community School Corporation (HCCSC) continues to address the
needs in our district relating to our facilities and serving our community. Plans have begun
to address the traffic patterns at Flint Springs Elementary and Horace Mann Elementary
Schools in collaboration with the City of Huntington. Additional work is in progress to
address the growing needs of our students and community members at the Huntington
County Community Learning Center as well.
Flint Springs Elementary School has seen growth in population and an increase in
parent/guardian drop off and pick up of students. These changes have created additional
vehicles lining up resulting in cars extending onto Tipton Street. HCCSC re-opened Horace
Mann Elementary for the start of the 2018-19 school year after the school had been closed
as an elementary building for seven years. Opening this building with students in grades
kindergarten through fifth grade once again also brought many parents and guardians
dropping off and picking up their students, which resulted in vehicles lined up onto
Waterworks Road. In an effort to improve the safety and to not block traffic on these two
roads, plans have begun to re-route the traffic patterns of cars and buses at these two
schools. These plans for improvements were announced at the HCCSC Board of Trustees
Meeting on Monday, September 14, 2020. A draft of these plans may be viewed on the
HCCSC web page at www.hccsc.k12.in.us by selecting the school and then clicking on the
Parent tab.
The Huntington County Community Learning Center (LC) came to life through the collective
efforts and funding of many community businesses, the City of Huntington, the County of
Huntington, and HCCSC in July of 2016. This facility serves not only students of HCCSC, but
many community members taking classes in the evenings through the IMPACT Institute, Ivy
Tech, Work One of Northeast Indiana, and Huntington University as well as being home to
the Huntington County 4-H Robotics Team. In the last four years the LC has seen a growth
in the number of students utilizing both the facility and its programs. Academic college
classes are offered both during the day and in the evening, in a variety of subjects. Over 200
community members have taken certification classes in CNC Machining, Industrial
Maintenance, and Welding, with five additional classes planned for this fall. A diagram of the
addition is available on the HCCLC web site.
Due to the continued growth at the LC, an expansion is planned for later this year. A
separate facility will be built next to the current facility. It will house both an expanded
welding shop with classroom that will triple space for welding, an advanced machine shop
with classroom that will allow for both expansion and modernization of the precision
machining program, as well as a new classroom and simulator room for the Criminal Justice
program. Also planned in the new space is shop space for both the current Industrial
Maintenance classes and the potential for Building Trades down the road. Space for the
High School Alternative School will also be included in the new facility.
The improvements in progress will be supported by the 2020 General Obligation Bonds.
