The Roanoke Elementary School project is moving ahead. At the Huntington County Community School Board meeting on October 8, the bid was awarded to Fetters Construction, Inc. out of Auburn, Ind. Construction will start with a groundbreaking ceremony near the end of October.
The new building will be 87,700 square feet and will be constructed to the west of the existing building allowing school to continue to function while construction occurs. The building consists of a two story classroom wing facing north to Vine Street with the new main entrance centered on this wing. The limestone sign at the top of the existing school will be salvaged and displayed inside the new main secure entry lobby.
There is a main event entry and canopy facing east, flanked by two single story classroom wings. The gymnasium, media center, stage and cafeteria are central to the building with the band and art rooms on the west side leading out to the playground areas. The design allows room for growth with three additional classrooms throughout the building and future addition locations identified to the east side of the classroom wings. Unique spaces such as a large group instruction room and multipurpose stage allow for flexibility and special events.
We are excited to get this project underway and will continue to post updates as we move forward.
