One of the HCCSC Core Values is ‘Focus on the Future.’ Eighth grade students from Crestview Middle School are discovering what that involves in their Planning for College & Careers course. PCC is led by Mrs. Lindsay Sloan and Mr. Peter Kitchen.
“We have been exploring Covey’s insights on what makes a person successful. From there we have used multiple tests to determine our strengths and interests. We have also used the state’s website, Indiana Career Explorer, to see what types of jobs suit our personalities, strengths, and interests in Indiana. After discovering a career that was interesting, we worked on our résumés, cover letters, and interviewing skills. All along, we have been listening to guest speakers share about their career experiences and helping us to see all of the different options we have when it comes to a career. These speakers often share some insights, answer questions, and give some advice to students. So far, we have had a Fitness and Wellness Coach, X-Ray and MRI Technician, Nurse Practitioner, an FBI agent, a Project Manager, and three different local manufacturing establishments visit, and more professionals booked for future classes,” described Mrs. Sloan.
“This project was a great tie-in with Career Day, which was held at the Huntington North Fieldhouse. Students were able to take their interests and see careers in action at Career Day. It was a great opportunity to research a topic that could apply to the students real lives,” stated Mr. Kitchen.
