Flint Springs Elementary 5th grade students work on projects at STARBASE IndianaFlint Springs Elementary 5th grade students had the opportunity to attend STARBASE Indiana at the Fort Wayne Air National Guard Base. This is an educational program sponsored by the Department of Defense. The program is a 5-day program designed to have all students actively participate in challenging “hands-on” activities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). Students interact with STEM professionals to explore careers and observe STEM application in the real world.

The program engages students through inquiry-based curriculum with its “hands-on, mind-on” experiential activities. Students study Newton’s Laws and Bernoulli’s principle, nanotechnology, navigation, and mapping. Students also use a computer to design space station components, then print them out on a 3D printer. Math is embedded throughout the curriculum, and students use metric measurement, estimation, calculation geometry, and data analysis to solve questions. Teamwork is stressed as they work together to explore, explain, elaborate, and evaluate concepts.

Students also participate in a tour around the National Guard base, where they will experience how to put our chemical fires, learn how injured personnel are transported, see an A-10 Warthog close up and the interior of a submarine.
