HCCSC schools honor service members for Veterans Day

Salamonie School hosted a program to honor local service members on Veterans Day

A day looked forward to each year, Veterans Day and its celebrations took on a different style within the Huntington County Community School Corporation in 2020, as honorary programs were altered for safety in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The majority of HCCSC’s schools opted for video presentations rather than hosting in-person programs, as Andrews Elementary, Flint Springs Elementary, Horace Mann Elementary, Roanoke Elementary, Riverview Middle School and Huntington North High School all created celebration videos.

Andrews Elementary’s video featured a trio of students singing “America the Beautiful” and a number of students sharing their thoughts on why veterans are important before finishing with a montage of students patriotically celebrating Veterans Day.

Flint Springs Elementary produced a tribute picturing veterans of Flint Springs families while students recited the poem “In Flanders Fields.”

Horace Mann Elementary’s video included students reading poems and essays to honor veterans and a class singing “God Bless America.”

Rounding out the elementary schools, Roanoke Elementary produced a number of individual videos for Veterans Day, combining to form a large patriotic medley.

Riverview Middle School created an extensive program featuring members of Riverview honoring family members who have served, a brief history of Veterans Day and a trio of Riverview alumni who are currently serving sharing about their roles in the armed forces.

Huntington North’s JROTC program provided content for the school’s tribute, as Chief Warrant Officer Bobby Blair shared about the history of Veterans Day before the colors were presented and national anthem performed by members of the JROTC program. The video was concluded by a montage of veterans of Huntington North families and the Huntington community as a whole.

Salamonie School was the lone school to still host an in-person program to honor local veterans, though the scene was shifted outdoors to Salamonie’s front parking lot.

Among the highlights of Salamonie’s program were statements from members of the Salamonie student council, a patriotic musical medley performed by all Salamonie students led by Salamonie music teacher Doug Hofherr, introduction of veteran guests and a gift presentation to veterans with students attending Salamonie. Hofherr then performed “Taps” to fittingly round out the program.

Although not being able to celebrate Veterans Day with many of the in-person celebrations that would normally take place, HCCSC is grateful for and proud of the work done by the corporation’s schools to honor our country’s veterans.
